Mervyns,(http://www.mervyns.com) major west coast family-oriented retailer, has selected KAL-SERV, Kenco Logistic Services’ sister company, to serve as a lead logistic provider (LLP), managing one million square feet of warehousing and distribution space.
KAL-SERV will oversee two operations located in the Ontario and Fremont, CA. The Ontario facility is 600,000 square feet and KAL-SERV will manage 145 sub-contracted associates. The Fremont operation is a 400,000 square-foot distribution center where KAL-SERV will supervise 79 sub-contracted associates.
According to Enrique Vizoso, Vice President Operations over the account, “As Mervyn’s LLP, KAL-SERV will manage the warehousing, receiving, shipping, breakpack (pick to light), value-added services, returns, and order processing through its partnership with subcontractors.”
Mr. Vizoso explained that “The building functions as large, automated cross-dock operation. Most product travels directly from receiving to shipping by way of 6 miles of conveyor and a high-speed sortation system. About 1/3 of the product is diverted from inbound into a break pack (pick-to-light) where it can be distributed to stores in less than full case quantities. Less than 3% of the inbound volume is stored in inventory. “
