Carpenter Technology is a specialty steel company that makes products used in such things as surgical instruments, braces for teeth, parts for the Space Shuttle, golf club shafts and magnetic strips in credit cards. After growing through acquisition for the last few years Carpenter found itself with a large number of distribution centers around the country which were not positioned to handle their growing customer base. They were not interested in investing in bricks and mortar to build the facilities they now needed.
Kenco helped Carpenter find the right number of distribution centers and right place to put them. We designed them to make them both efficient and yet generic enough so that they would have a marketable value should Carpenter ever decide to leave. Then we designed a document called a Storage Service Agreement, which allowed Carpenter to have the benefits of a lease without having to capitalize a long-term commitment. And finally we built five and now operate seven Carpenter facilities across the country. We ship, receive, grind, bore and cut these special metals that carry a value in excess of ten times that of regular steel.
By working with Carpenter we drove down the amount of inventory that was needed in the field and increased the service level to their customers. |
